Quick question as I take a break from writing about podcasting just for a moment. When you see this avatar, do you think Leesa Barnes?

Making Money With a Podcast, the Book

The big announcement took a little longer to make due to some changes that were happening, but I can now say what I’ll be working on over the next 60-days.

I just signed a contract to write a book on how to make money using a podcast. My publisher (I like how that sounds) is MaxPress, who also publish titles for IBM. The manuscript is due on April 15th and the book will be ready for sale just before the Podcast & New Media Expo takes place at the end of September.

This book happened because of a few people.

Toronto Technology Week is Coming May 28th to June 1st

Wow, the week of May 28th is going to be an exciting time in the city of Toronto. The Canadian New Media Awards - considered the Oscars of well…new media - will take place on May 27, 2007 (btw, they’re looking for nominees, so if you know of a Canadian making waves in the new media space, fill out the form, but beware of the submission fee).

Then a few days later on May 30th, Mesh starts. I missed this conference last year, but I’m certain not to miss this year, no matter what it takes. Also, there looks like a BarCamp will be organized during this week.

Why Having a Separate Blog for Your Podcast Makes Sense

A friend of mine, Bill Sweetman, just launched his new podcast called Marketing Martini. The tagline is Internet Marketing Advice Served Straight Up. Love it!

It’s short, sweet and to the point. Perfect for our limited attention spans. I took a quick look at his podcast before it went live and offered my feedback. I have to say that his podpage looks better than mine.

One of the women I hailed as a 2006 Savvy Female Podcaster, Colette Vogele, has finally launched her own podcast called Rules for the Revolution. It’s a look at the legal issues around user generated content.

I’ve been telling people to use their existing blog to publish their podcasts, just create a separate category. In Wordpress, this is easy to do. Typepad has made this simpler as well, so I can now recommend Typepad as an adequate podcasting publishing tool. However, this has presented a few problems.

Don’t Blame Your Podcast When All Else Fails

I was reading an article written by Alex J. Walling, a writer with HalifaxLive.com on how miserably the organizers behind the American Basketball Association’s all star game failed in communicating with the media.

When the journalist asked the organizers why the media wasn’t informed in advanced about a cancelled game, they said:

“We went after a global audience by podcasting it.”

To which Walling said:

“I tried to download the podcast and gave up after having to answer a million questions to get it.

“I wonder how many people watched the podcast, let’s say in Sri Lanka, or Moscow and how will that be converted into selling tickets for the Rainmen? (the game was played in Halifax, NS).”

What’s the lesson here?

Big Announcement This Week

It’s funny how things work in this world. I have about 10 key business goals that I want to accomplish in 2007 and one ties in with the Portable & New Media Expo that will take place in September 2007. I went last year and will be there this year again.

I got a call this week from 2 people that will make 1 of my 2007 goals a reality. Sorry to be so cagey, but I must wait until the ink dries before I say what it is. My family knows and only a smattering of my close colleagues know. And it’s a small smatter.

Stay tuned because before the week ends, I’ll post my big details to this blog. I’m terribly excited about this.

How to Become an iTunes Staff Pick

One of my clients, Barbara Bradbury, emailed me today to let me know that her podcast, Relationship Matters is a Staff Pick in the UK Podcast Directory in iTunes. I grabbed the screen shot and you can see it above (her podcast is the second from the left on first line).

iTunes lists some of the ways you can get your podcast listed on their front page. Some of their requirements are:
